When the Edgartown ACO, Barbara Prada brought the 4 year old male Rottweiler, “Buddy” to the shelter she was almost in tears. After decades of serving the community, Barbara has seen just about everything, but Buddy was a real mess. He was missing about 40% of his coat to infection, and he had been sleeping in a box of insulation, so his skin was like a porcupine. Lisa cleaned him up, and he loved it. In spite of years of abuse, neglect, and being passed around, Buddy still managed to be a happy, confident and very sweet dog. We allocated some money from our “Suzie Fund” which covers medical costs for shelter residents. He started his medical treatment, along with a highly nutritional diet, and we gave him all the loving he could handle. We enlisted trainers Tom Shelby and Jeremy Jones, as Buddy was very much like a puppy and had no idea how to behave. National Rottweiler expert and Island resident Sean Flynn and his wife Becky Donnelly also put a great deal of time into helping us get Buddy on a path to success, directing him to an environment in which he could succeed. It took us a couple of months to get him to a point where he was adoptable. Buddy went home to a wonderful family..
